Artworks Basic 1.9.0.5

Composition Software with "real time" methods for Art

Artworks Basic is a robust "composition" tool with unique features tailor made to help with "real world" painting.

Features include the world's first "real time" color study tools and color reference system to study lighting and color effects, an interactive canvas window to frame pleasing compositions, a grid overlay for drawing proportions, a "golden mean" composition grid to arrange good focal points in your composition, grisaille underlay tools and controls, basic photo-editing filters, and painting effects filters to help with style.

What's more, the software comes with a printed color wheel, value scale, and chroma intensity scale to interpret screen colors, plan color schemes, and mix colors reliably and accurately (see details below). These charts alone add considerable value to the the product.

G-Lab™ 2.0 (Gagnon) Color Wheel

Included with Artworks Basic

The G-Lab™ 2.0 Color Wheel has 32 complements (hues) arranged opposite each other in the traditional form of a circle. The difference between this color wheel and a traditional color wheel for mixing paints is that the hues are arranged into eight hue families based upon "golden mean" proportions and they are gray balanced upon optical behaviors... not pigment behaviors.

The benefit is that you can use this color wheel to interpret screen colors, make color notes, share color solutions, plan color arrangements, and mix colors using our three stage method.

When mixing color with paints, you can use this color wheel with value scale and chroma scale (see below), as a consistent frame of reference to mix hundreds of subtle colors. These charts save you time, help you build confidence, and it reduce waste.

Quality Printing: Gray balanced using the Gagnon method and precisely* measured with spectrophotometer, this color wheel is reliably printed with "light fast" archival inks on acid free paper and laminated for protection from environmental influences.

Dimensions: 11.5 cms x 16 cms or 4.5 " x 6.25 "

Other Notes: The G-Lab™ 2.0 Color Wheel is a gray balanced color wheel for both "real time" (digital) and "real world" (pigment) media. It works hand-in-hand with the "real time" color study tools in Artworks Basic. The software comes with a Color Tutorial that explains how to use this chart.

Also, the highest chroma in the outermost ring is High 8 (H8). This is more than high enough for most "real world" art applicaitons.

G-Lab™ 2.0 Value Scale - 16 Half Tone Grays

Included with Artworks Basic

The G-Lab™ 2.0 Value Scale has 16 half-tone gray levels arranged in steps from dark to light. The highest value on this scale is 8+ which approximately 86% and represents a lightness range of 86% to 92% light (using CIE L*a*b* D65). This is more than sufficient to measure the lightest values when painting.

Use this scale to convert screen values into pigment values, measure the value on pigment surfaces, and mix color to controlled values with artist paints, pastels, and pencils.

Dimensions: 4 cms x 17 cms or 1.5" x 6.625"

G-Lab™ 2.0 Chroma Scale - 16 Hues

Included with Artworks Basic

The G-Lab™ 2.0 Chroma Scale includes every second hue from the 32 hues in the G-Lab™ 2.0 Color Wheel. Each hue on the Chroma Scale ranges from Low 2 (L2) to High 8 (H8) while keeping the same value level. Each of the purest hues on this chart matches its equivalent on the color wheel. For example, R1 is the same chroma as R1 on the color wheel. Both are H8.

This is a handy, practical tool with more than enough accuracy to control the low, middle, and high chroma intensities when mixing color with paints, pastels, and pencils.

Dimensions: 11.5 cms x 16 cms or 4.5 " x 6.25 "

* precisely measured with spectrophotometer and reliably printed to within 1% of the G-Lab 2.0 (Gagnon) color specification for the more than 4000 printed colors (4K). This is more than close enough for the uses described above (e.g. planning color arrangements for painting).

Please note that the images above are screen shots of the actual printed color chart so colors will vary.

Also, Gagnon Colors and G-Lab 2.0 Colors are one and the same. The "Gagnon" name will eventually replace "G-Lab 2.0" over the next few months.
